The Stem Cell Network (SCN) and the Center of Genomics and Policy (CGP) at McGill University are pleased to offer the second multidisciplinary ELSI course entitled “Understanding Stem Cell Controversies”

This three-day capacity-building course has been developed to provide participants with a broad knowledge of current stem cell research endeavors and a deeper understanding of the ethical, legal and social issues associated with stem cells research and their therapeutic applications.

Who should attend: Anyone interested in broadening their understanding of the regulatory and socio-ethical issues that encompasses the field of stem cell research. In particular, the course content is targeted for the wide range of national and international stakeholders comprising the stem cell community including: scientists, clinicians, bioethicists, health charities representatives, patient advocates, members of ethics review boards and policy makers, as well as industry representatives.

To maximize opportunities for networking and participant engagement, this course is limited to 40 participants.

Key Learning Opportunities:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the current and the future state of stem cell research and the potential therapeutic applications.
  • Multiple 101 sessions designed to provide participants who are new to the stem cell field with a solid background.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the Canadian and international legal and regulatory frameworks that govern different stages of stem cell research (i.e. stem cell derivation, banking, first in-human clinical trials) and its therapeutic applications.
  • Develop an understanding of the legal issues associated with the commercialization of stem cell research.
  • Gain an appreciation for the socio-ethical challenges facing the field of stem cells, and the challenges it poses in the development of therapies
  • Establish connections with leaders in this field.
