Undergraduate Research Training Award

Summary

  • Application Deadlines: 1st Friday of February & 1st Friday of October
  • Provides funds (1) towards the salary for an undergraduate student to work on a research project with clear relevance to stem cells (max. $10,000 for two four-month work-terms which may be contiguous or in summers following the 2nd and 3rd year of the awardee’s training period); (2) for the awardee to attend one SCN Annual General Meeting to present his/her research.
  • The SCN expects to fund two (2) undergrad research training awards per year. Annual funds are allocated on a first-come/first-considered basis.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at a Canadian university.
  • Candidates' proposed supervisors for the apprenticeship placement must be SCN PIs (click here for a list of current SCN PIs). Note: A SCN PI can host an undergrad student from a different institution than his/her own.
  • SCN PIs may only submit one undergraduate research training award or one co-op award application in any competition, and SCN PIs may only receive one co-op award or one undergraduate research training award per calendar year.
  • Research project must clearly fall within SCN mission and be collaborative in nature.

Specific Terms of the Award

The intent of this award is to enable undergraduate students to obtain significant hands-on experience in stem cell research through work term placement under the supervision of a Stem Cell Network (SCN) Principal Investigator (PI). Furthermore, attendance at the Network Annual General Meeting will provide students with the opportunity to further their knowledge in the stem cell field, to network with the Canadian stem cell research community and to further their presentation skills. Ultimately, this program should increase the number of highly qualified graduate school applicants and provide opportunities for the recruitment of these students into stem cell research programs.

SCN will provide up to two awards annually of up to $10,000 each. The awards are to support two four-month work terms.

In addition to the $10,000 award, SCN will provide financial support for awardees to present their research as a poster at the SCN Annual General Meeting that overlaps or immediately follows the work placement. SCN will reimburse the costs of registration, travel, accommodation, and meals for the awardees to attend the Annual General Meeting as per the Network Travel Policy. This scientific meeting is Canada’s premier stem cell conference, and typically attracts 350-400 participants over a three-day period from academia, industry and government, features over 120 posters, and is notable for its almost equal balance of PI and trainee talks.

At the conclusion of the placement, the student will be expected to submit a short description of the experience and its impact on his/her career choice by completing the End of Award Form. In the event that the award has to be terminated in advance of the award end date (e.g.; student dropped out of the undergraduate program), the student will be expected to complete the Terminating Award Form and any remaining SCN funds will have to be returned. Supervisors will be eligible for future awards only after the trainee has filed the report with the Network.
