Dr. Michael Rudnicki

Dr. Michael Rudnicki, PhD
Scientific Director

Dr. Michael Rudnicki is the Scientific Director of the Stem Cell Network. He is Senior Scientist and Director of the Regenerative Medicine Program and the Sprott Centre for Stem Cell Research at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and the Scientific Director of the International Regulome Consortium. Dr. Rudnicki is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he holds the Canada Research Chair in Molecular Genetics, and is an International Research Scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Rudnicki's laboratory is responsible for the milestone identification of the Pax7 protein that triggers stem cell specification into muscle cells.

Philip Welford

Philip Welford
Executive Director

Philip Welford is the Executive Director at the Stem Cell Network, a position he assumed in November 2013. Prior to joining SCN, Philip was the Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at JDRF Canada for over two and a half years.

Previously, Philip served in the role of Chief of Staff with the Government of Canada, the Chief of Staff to the Minister of State for Science and Technology, the Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency of Southern Ontario and the Director of Parliamentary Affairs for Rx&D, the industry association representing Canada‘s research based pharmaceutical industry.

Originally from England, Philip moved to Canada in 2004. Prior to moving here he was an entrepreneur in the agricultural and retail industry. Philip is a strong leader with a passion for business optimization, staff development and corporate and social responsibility.

Rebecca Cadwalader

Rebecca Cadwalader
Research Administration & Finance Coordinator

Rebecca joined the Stem Cell Network in November 2011. As the Network’s Research Administration & Finance Coordinator, she will organize meetings and training workshops and assist with accounting functions. Prior to joining the SCN, Rebecca was the Manager at the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (University of British Columbia), a research institute which builds communities of scientists to promote collaboration and applications in the mathematical sciences. She brings to the Network 10 years experience in administration and finance management across a variety of organizations in Canada and the United Kingdom. Rebecca holds a degree in Law & Politics from Cardiff University (UK), and a certificate in business accounting from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK).

Paul Cassar

Paul Cassar
Scientist-in-Residence

Paul joined the Stem Cell Network in January 2012, and is responsible for the smooth administration of the scientific and training programs, and for managing relationships with training partners. Prior to joining the SCN, Paul was a Stem Cell Network trainee working in the field of Integrative Genomics and Stem Cell Biology during his PhD at the University of Toronto under the supervision of William Stanford. As a Stem Cell Network trainee, Paul was actively involved in the promotion of science literacy, and was a coordinator for the leading Canadian science outreach organization, Let’s Talk Science. Paul is the co-founder of StemCellTalks, a public outreach initiative designed to facilitate knowledge transfer between the stem cell community and senior level high school students across Canada. He holds a B.Sc from McMaster University in Biology & Pharmacology, and during his undergraduate training, Paul spent nearly two years doing research as a co-op student at AstraZeneca R&D Montreal.

Peter Raaymakers

Peter Raaymakers
Communications Coordinator

Peter joined the Network in January 2010 on a part-time basis, and came on board full-time in September 2011. As the Communications Coordinator, Peter manages the SCN website, and works with the Communications Director in developing SCN newsletters, videos, blog posts, annual reports, and other projects. He is also coordinator for the Till & McCulloch Meetings. He has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Communications from the University of Ottawa.

Will Read

Will Read
Research Program Manager

Will joined the Stem Cell Network in July 2005, establishing the project management infrastructure for the Network’s research program. He is currently the Research Program Manager, acting as a resource and mentor to the full- and part-time project managers across the Network. Will holds degrees in computer science (MCS, University of Ottawa, 1994) and business administration (MBA, Royal Roads University, 2005). He has over 25 years of experience in public- and private-sector project management, and has held the Project Management Professional (PMP) designation since 1999.

Shannon Sethuram

Shannon Sethuram
Manager of Finance and Administration

Shannon joined the Stem Cell Network in September 2008 as the Manager of Finance responsible for maintaining all of the Network's accounting records and financial reporting to the Government. Prior to joining the Network, Shannon was an accountant with Sustainable Development Technology Canada. She has held the position of controller with Cummings Mitchell Inc., and as an accountant with private businesses in both Ottawa and Halifax. Shannon is a graduate of the Business Program at Mount Saint Vincent University.

Lisa Willemse

Lisa Willemse
Director of Communications

Lisa joined the Stem Cell Network in 2008, assuming the role of Director Communications. She manages the Network’s online and print materials and oversees internal, public and media relations. Lisa brings more than 10 years’ experience in project management and communications from national research projects based in both London, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta. She has also worked as a freelance journalist and editor for a variety of newspapers and magazines. Lisa is a graduate of the Communications program at the University of Calgary.
