Becoming a Member
A researcher becomes an SCN member by participating as a funded Principal Investigator (PI) on a Network project, or being identified by a Project Leader as an active collaborator on an SCN research project.
SCN membership is approved by the Board, following the recommendation of the Research Management Committee. Funding competitions for research projects are open to full-time faculty members at Canadian research institutions eligible to receive Granting Council funding.
As a Network member, a PI is accorded the following benefits:
- Right to attend Annual General Meeting and other SCN meetings at SCN expense
- Right to bring trainees to such meetings, at SCN expense, in accordance with the specific policies for each meeting as determined by the SCN office.
- Right to obtain commercialization advice and support from the SCN office.
- Right to apply for SCN trainee awards.
- Access to all other programs made available by the SCN to SCN PIs.
As a SCN member, PIs are also bound by the duties and responsibilities of the Network Agreement, including Network of Centres of Excellence reporting and intellectual property disclosure requirements. When a PI ceases to be a participant in an SCN-funded project, he or she can choose to remain an SCN member for a further two years.
